Robert Jamal Sanders is a 2004 graduate of Northwestern High School. During his time at Northwestern, he was a member of the Principal’s Advisory Council; served as an executive officer of PROGENY, a student-organization created to educate and promote appreciation of cultural diversity; and participated in the Teacher Cadet program. After graduating from Northwestern, Sanders attended Winthrop University and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in December 2010. While attending Winthrop, he was employed in the banking industry for five years, working at BB&T and Wachovia. When Wachovia was merged with Wells Fargo, Sanders was displaced and became a substitute teacher. After working to obtain teacher licensure through the ABCTE program, he became licensed as a highly qualified mathematics teacher in February 2011.
Now in his 8th year as an educator, Sanders has served as a mathematics teacher at Chester Senior High School and Rock Hill High School. In addition, he has coached football, basketball, and track. He has also served as an athletic administrator at both schools. During his career as a classroom teacher, Sanders earned several honors including:
- Employee of Excellence at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø (first quarter, 2015-16);
- South Carolina’s ABCTE Teacher of the Year Runner-Up (2012-13);
- Teacher of the Year Finalist at Chester Senior High School (2011-12); and
- Cyclone Teacher Pick of the Quarter at Chester Senior High School (first quarter, 2011-12).
While teaching and coaching, Sanders continued on his academic journey at Georgia Southern University and obtained a Master of Education in Educational Leadership in December 2015. He recently transitioned into school administration and currently serves as the assistant principal at Lewisville High School in Richburg, South Carolina. Sanders is now attending Wingate University in pursuit of a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership and plans to be completed by summer 2019.
“My time at Northwestern High School has allowed me the opportunity to sharpen my leadership skills and abilities and has contributed to my academic and career success! My teachers and administrators have all played a major role in preparing me, and I look forward to continuing to utilize what I've learned to make meaningful and significant contributions in the world of education. Thank you Coach Blake and Northwestern High School for helping me to LIGHT THE TORCH!”
