My name is Daniel McCallum, and I am one of the assistant principals at Northwestern High. I was born and raised in Rock Hill, graduated from NHS, and proud to be a Trojan! My favorite food is prime rib. My favorite color is black. I am married to the best woman on earth, and we have three wonderful children. I am a huge fan of collegiate athletics. I much rather watch college sports than professional sports. My wife and I both have degrees from the University of South Carolina, and we love our Gamecocks! This may be the only commonality we have other than being married, loving each other, and raising a family together. We are Gamecock Club members and football season ticket holders. We enjoy watching all Gamecock athletics, but football holds a special place. Most people that attend an SEC school and enjoy athletics, hold football a little higher than the rest. On most weekends during football season, my family and I can be found in Columbia tailgating with friends. My favorite quote about life comes from Sylvester Stallone’s character Rocky Balboa in the 6th Rocky movie. The quote is as follows:
“The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place, and I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody, is going to hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done! Now if you know what you’re are worth, then go out and get what you are worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers, saying you ain’t where you want to be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that, and that ain’t you!”
I feel that I have built, not only my philosophy of education but, my philosophy of life around this quote. People all need support in reaching goals in education and life. Support networks are essential to success. All individuals have a story and their own personal challenges that can essentially prevent success if allowed. I am passionate in teaching others to take responsibility for his or her actions and how those actions affect his or her future. We all have things that can hold us back if we allow them to and it takes a conscious effort to get past these things and make best of the hand we are dealt. I want success for all students, and I feel that we are blessed to be a part of a nation and educational system in which that can take place.
