    Advanced Studies Mission Statement:

    Advanced Studies courses and programs at South Pointe High School will provide equitable access to engaging and rigorous curricula that cultivate critical thinking, self-management, and open-mindedness, leading to success and active participation within the global community.

    The International Baccalaureate Program is an international program that offers rigorous coursework across six major subjects.  Students may elect to pursue the International Baccalaureate Diploma by taking all six courses or simply take a pair or pairs of select IB courses.  The IB program is a holistic approach of mastery, achieved through challenging coursework and additional opportunities such as the Theory of Knowledge course, the Extended Essay, and CAS (Creativity, Activity, and Service) learning components.  The program recognizes that students have strengths and weaknesses within all six subjects.  Courses are taught through international perspectives and the IB recognized Approaches to Teaching and Learning, along with developing in students the Learner Profile characteristics which encourage both academic and personal growth.

    Assessment: Student mastery of content is measured by a variety of assessments including paper/pencil examinations, oral presentations, projects, essays, and lab work.  All IB courses emphasize strong writing and communication skills, critical and analytical thinking skills, and global perspectives.

    International Baccalaureate Courses Offered:

    · Language A: Literature (paired with History)

    · US History and History of the Americas

    · Math Studies or Math SL (paired with science)

    · Biology or Chemistry

    · Spanish or Spanish ab initio (paired with IB elective   from below)

    · Psychology

    · Theatre

     

    IB courses are two-year courses (junior and senior year)offered on an A/B day schedule.  Prerequisites must be met to enroll in IB courses.  All IB Examinations are administered in the spring of the student’s senior year (completion of the two year course).  Students are able to choose assessment level (higher or standard) for many of the courses based upon individual strengths and weaknesses.
